How to Use the Image Auto Trim Tool
This tool detects and removes transparent padding around logos and icons, as well as white, black, or other solid-color borders around images.
1. Upload an image
Click “Choose Image” to select a file, or drag and drop it into the upload area. You can also paste an image from the clipboard with Ctrl + V or ⌘ + V.
PNG, JPG, JPEG, and WebP images are supported. Upload one image at a time, with a file size of up to 50MB.
A sample image is displayed initially, so you can try the settings before uploading your own image.
2. Choose a detection method
“Auto Detect” is selected by default. Check the crop area, and choose “Transparent Padding” or “Solid-Color Padding” if automatic detection does not give the result you want.
For example, to remove white padding, choose “Solid-Color Padding” and set “Padding Color” to “White.”
3. Adjust tolerance and the padding to keep
“Tolerance” controls which pixels are treated as padding.
“Keep Padding” lets you leave 0–100px of padding around the cropped image. It cannot add space beyond the original image boundaries.
4. Check the crop area in the preview
The preview shows the original image with a crop outline. The area inside the outline is kept, and the darkened area outside it is removed. Adjust the settings while checking that the crop area includes everything you want to keep.
Select “Hide Crop Area” to preview only the trimmed image. This checkbox changes how the preview is displayed without changing the area that will be saved.
The preview is scaled to fit the available space. Check “Output Size” below it for the actual width and height of the saved image.
5. Download the image
Click “Download” to save the image with the padding removed.
If padding cannot be detected, downloading is disabled. Adjust the detection method, padding color, or tolerance.
Click “Reset” to restore the default settings while keeping the image you uploaded.
Detection Methods and Settings
Three ways to detect padding
Auto Detect
Uses the corners and outer edges of the image to automatically determine whether it has transparent padding or padding in a consistent color.
Automatic detection may not find a crop area if the colors around the edges vary or the padding is very small. If it does not work, choose another detection method.
Transparent Padding
Uses pixel transparency to identify padding. This is suitable for PNG or WebP images with transparent space around a logo or illustration.
At the default tolerance of 0, only fully transparent pixels count as padding. Faint outlines and partially transparent shadows are kept.
Solid-Color Padding
Detects padding based on how closely pixels match the selected “Padding Color.” This is suitable for images surrounded by white, black, or another solid color.
The colors do not need to match exactly. Adjust “Tolerance” to treat similar colors as padding too.
Set the reference color with “Padding Color”
For solid-color padding, you can specify the reference color in the following ways. This setting identifies padding; it does not recolor the image.
- Auto Pick: Estimates the padding color from the corners of the image. If the color cannot be determined, choose White, Black, or Custom Color.
- White / Black: Select one of these if you know the padding is white or black.
- Custom Color: Choose a color with the color picker or enter a color code in the picker’s input field.
With “Custom Color” selected, “Pick Color from Image” is also available in supported browsers. Clicking it opens the color picker’s eyedropper, which lets you select a color displayed on your screen.
Adjust which pixels count as padding with “Tolerance”
Set a whole number from 0 to 100. Transparent and solid-color padding use different criteria, and their tolerance values are stored separately.
- Transparent Padding: The default is 0. Increasing it allows partially transparent pixels, such as faint shadows, to count as padding.
- Solid-Color Padding: The default is 5. At 0, colors must match the selected color exactly. Higher values also include similar colors.
If JPEG compression has introduced slight color variations in white padding, increasing the tolerance a little may help remove it. Setting it too high can also classify pale details or faint shadows you want to keep as padding. Start with a low value and check the crop outline as you adjust it.
Leave space around the content with “Keep Padding”
Leaves the specified number of pixels around all four sides of the detected content. At 0px, the image is cropped to the detected content bounds. At 10px, 10px of padding is kept on each side.
Only padding that exists in the original image can be kept. This setting does not expand the image or add new padding beyond its edges.
Output Formats and Notes
Images are normally saved in their original format
- PNG images are saved as PNG.
- JPG and JPEG images are saved as JPG.
- WebP images are saved as WebP.
There is no setting to choose an output format manually. If your browser cannot save in the original format, the image is saved as PNG and a notice is displayed. Check “Output Format” and the downloaded file to confirm the actual format.
Upload file size and image dimensions have limits
- File size: Up to 50MB.
- Width and height: Up to 8192px each.
- Total pixel count: Up to 24 million pixels (24MP).
Your device or browser may be unable to process an image even within these limits. If this happens, reduce the dimensions of the original image and upload it again.
FAQ
What should I do if padding cannot be detected automatically?
Choose “Transparent Padding” for transparent space, or “Solid-Color Padding” for padding with a color such as white. If the padding color cannot be picked automatically, specify it with White, Black, or Custom Color. If you have set a high tolerance, lowering it may help detection succeed.
Auto Detect may leave very small amounts of padding untouched. Try selecting Transparent Padding or Solid-Color Padding directly.
Why is some white or transparent padding still left?
Check that “Keep Padding” is set to 0px. If padding still remains, slightly different shades of white, faint shadows, or small dots may be counted as image content. Adjust the padding color or tolerance.
Can I make the background around a person or product transparent?
This tool removes padding around the edges of an image. It does not detect people or products to remove their backgrounds.
Can I drag the crop outline or crop to a square?
This tool detects padding automatically and does not let you set a crop area manually. To choose the crop area or shape yourself, use the Image Crop Tool.
Can I keep more padding than the original image has?
“Keep Padding” can only preserve space within the original image. To add new padding around the image, use the Image Padding Tool.
Why can’t I use “Pick Color from Image”?
This feature is unavailable in browsers that do not support the eyedropper. In those browsers, choose a color with the color picker or enter a color code in its input field.
Are my images sent to or stored on a server?
No. Images are processed in your browser, and image data is never sent to or stored on a server.
