How to Use the Image Padding Tool
1. Upload an image
Click “Choose Image” to select an image file, or drag and drop it into the upload area. You can also paste an image from the clipboard with Ctrl + V or ⌘ + V.
PNG, JPG, JPEG, and WebP images are supported. A sample image is displayed initially, so you can try the settings before uploading your own image.
2. Choose a padding mode and set the size
Use the “Padding Mode” dropdown to choose the method that suits your needs.
Set Padding Size
Specify how much padding to add around the original image in pixels. Enable “Use the Same Padding on All Sides” to set a single value for all four sides, or disable it to set the top, right, bottom, and left padding separately. Enter whole numbers of 0 or greater. Setting a side to 0px adds no padding on that side.
Set Image Size
Specify the desired width and height of the output image. The original image is centered, and padding is added around it to reach the specified dimensions. Set both the width and height to values at least as large as the corresponding dimensions of the original image.
Set Aspect Ratio
Specify the desired aspect ratio of the output image. The original image is centered, and padding is added to match the chosen ratio. Presets include 1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 16:9, 4:3, and 3:2. You can also choose “Custom Ratio” and enter your own values in “Ratio Width” and “Ratio Height.”
3. Choose the padding color
- White / Black: Fill the added padding with white or black.
- Transparent: Add transparent padding without a color fill.
- Custom Color: Use the color picker to choose a color and opacity. You can also enter a color code.
4. Check the preview and dimensions
The preview updates in real time as you change the settings, showing the image with the added padding.
The following information appears below the preview:
- Original Size: The width and height of the uploaded image.
- Output Size: The width and height of the saved image, including padding.
- Added Padding: The amount of padding added to the top, right, bottom, and left.
- Output Format: The file format of the downloaded image.
The preview is scaled to fit the available space. Check “Output Size” for the actual dimensions of the saved image.
5. Download the image
When you are happy with the result, click “Download Image” to save it.
Click “Reset” if you want to start over.
Output Formats and Notes
The output format is selected automatically
The edited image is normally saved in the same format as the original. If you select “Transparent” or use “Custom Color” with an opacity below 100%, it is saved as a PNG to preserve transparency.
| Original format | Opaque padding | Transparent or partially transparent padding |
|---|---|---|
| JPG / JPEG | JPG | PNG |
| PNG | PNG | PNG |
| WebP | WebP | PNG |
If your browser cannot save in the original format, a different format may be used. Check “Output Format” and the downloaded file to confirm the actual format.
Image size limits apply to uploads and downloads
- Upload file size: Up to 50MB.
- Width and height of both the original and output images: Up to 8192px each.
- Total pixel count of both the original and output images: Up to 24 million pixels (24MP) each.
Your device or browser may be unable to process an image even within these limits.
Saving the image may affect its quality
The original image is placed at its original width and height, but it is re-encoded when saved, which may affect image quality. Metadata such as EXIF is not guaranteed to be preserved.
FAQ
How is adding padding different from resizing or cropping?
This tool increases the overall image dimensions by adding space around the original image without resizing or cropping it. To change the width and height without adding padding, use the Image Resizer. To remove unwanted areas, use the Image Crop Tool.
Why does Added Padding sometimes show half-pixel values such as 0.5px?
“Set Image Size” and “Set Aspect Ratio” center the original image. If the original and output widths or heights differ by an odd number of pixels, the tool uses half-pixel padding to keep opposite sides equal. Values entered directly in “Set Padding Size” must be whole pixels.
Can I make a photo’s background transparent or change its background color?
You can change the color and opacity of the added padding only. The tool does not remove the background within the original image or fill its existing transparent areas with a color.
Can I change the output format?
You cannot change the output format manually. It normally matches the original image’s format, but selecting “Transparent” or using “Custom Color” with an opacity below 100% produces a PNG. Check “Output Format” below the preview to see the format used for saving.
Are my images sent to or stored on a server?
No. Your images are processed entirely in your browser. Image data is never sent to or stored on a server.
