How to Use the Duotone Image Effect Tool
1. Upload an image
Drag and drop a photo or image into the "Image Upload" area, or click "Choose Image" to select a file. PNG, JPG, JPEG, and WebP images are supported, with a maximum file size of 50MB. You can also paste an image copied to your clipboard.
A sample image is displayed by default, so you can try the duotone effect without uploading your own image.
2. Choose a color preset
Select a color combination under "Color Presets." Choosing a preset sets the shadow and highlight colors and updates the preview with the effect.
3. Adjust the shadow and highlight colors
You can choose a preset or customize both colors.
- Shadow Color: The color assigned to the dark areas of the image.
- Highlight Color: The color assigned to the light areas of the image.
Use the color selection area or hue bar in each color picker to change the color. You can also enter HEX or RGB values directly.
4. Adjust the effect intensity
Use the "Effect Intensity" slider or number field to adjust the strength of the duotone effect.
- 100%: Replaces the image's colors with tones based on the shadow and highlight colors.
- Values in between: Applies the duotone effect while retaining some of the original colors.
- 0%: Does not apply the duotone color replacement.
5. Fine-tune the result with advanced settings
Open "Advanced Settings" to adjust the following three settings.
- Contrast: Adjusts the difference between light and dark areas.
- Brightness: Adjusts the overall brightness of the image.
- Saturation: Adjusts the intensity of the colors.
Each setting has a slider and number field. Click "Clear" to remove the adjustment for that setting.
6. Check the preview
Your settings are reflected in the preview in real time. Adjust the settings while checking the preview until you get the result you want.
Use "Before" and "After" at the top right of the preview to compare the original and processed images.
7. Set the output dimensions
Under "Output Image Settings" below the preview, specify the "Width" and "Height" of the saved image in pixels. Uploading an image automatically sets these values to its dimensions, so change them when you want a different output size.
Enable "Lock Aspect Ratio" to resize the image while preserving its proportions. You can also disable it and set the width and height independently, but the image may appear stretched vertically or horizontally.
8. Download the processed image
Once you have checked the result and output dimensions, click "Download PNG." The processed image is saved in PNG format.
To start over, click "Reset" in the customization panel.
What Is a Duotone Effect?
A duotone effect assigns different colors to the dark and light areas of an image, creating a color palette based on two colors. It gives the image a unified color scheme while preserving the photo's light and shadow.
For example, choosing magenta for the dark areas and cyan for the light areas gives shadows magenta tones and highlights cyan tones. Areas of intermediate brightness use colors between the two.
A duotone effect does not reduce an image to only two colors. Intermediate colors are also used according to brightness, preserving the photo's natural tonal gradations.
Shadow and highlight colors
The shadow color is used for the dark areas of the image, while the highlight color is used for the light areas. Choosing colors with different hues for shadows and highlights makes the distinctive contrast of a duotone effect more noticeable.
There is no rule requiring the shadow color to be darker than the highlight color. Choosing a light shadow color and a dark highlight color can create an effect that appears to reverse the light and dark areas.
FAQ
Which image formats are supported?
You can upload PNG, JPG, JPEG, and WebP images. The maximum file size is 50MB.
Can I try the tool without uploading an image?
Yes. Use the default sample image to try color presets, color settings, and effect intensity.
Will the image use only the two colors I choose?
No. Colors between the two are also used according to brightness. The effect creates tones based on two colors rather than reducing the image to exactly two colors.
What happens when I lower the effect intensity?
Some of the original colors remain, making the duotone effect more subtle. At 100%, the two-color palette is more pronounced. At 0%, no duotone color replacement is applied.
Can I adjust contrast, brightness, and saturation?
Yes. Click "Advanced Settings" to display the controls and adjust these settings.
Can I save the result as a JPG or WebP?
This tool outputs PNG images. Even if you upload a JPG, JPEG, or WebP image, the processed result is saved in PNG format.
Are uploaded images stored on a server?
No. Uploaded images are processed entirely in your browser and are never sent to or stored on a server.
Can I use the processed images commercially?
This tool is free to use for both personal and commercial purposes. You do not need to link to this site or provide credit. However, images you upload remain subject to the original image's copyright and usage terms.
